What is the difference between a Registered Dietitian and a Nutritionist?

A registered dietitian is a food and nutrition expert who has met academic and professional requirement standards set by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND).

What are the benefits of working with a Dietitian?

When seeing a Registered Dietitian, RD, the goal is not to follow the latest diet trend in the media. A dietitian understands the need for customization; there is no one-size-fits-all approach. An RD takes a detailed medical history into account, tailors the program towards the types of foods preferred by the client and what the client’s lifestyle is like. Healthy eating is not about taking away options but educating the client on healthy choices to maximize longevity and promote wellness.

What do I bring to my first Nutritional Consult?

A food diary should be brought to the consultation visit, ranging anywhere from 3-days to one week, depending on the clients. Additionally, any lab work and a list of medications is useful for the provider to review when assessing and designing the program.

Will the Registered dietitian (RD) make me cut out my favorite foods?

Not necessarily. It is the job of RD to help maximize your overall health and wellness through what you eat. If there are foods that are preferred, but don’t provide the necessary nutrients or vitamins that your body is in need of, the dietician may make suggestions on how to supplement your diet with nutrient-rich foods. Our nutrition appointments are all about education and helping clients live better, not only about cutting out foods.
